Country and State Codes
Location Identifiers for Database Submissions

The codes shown below are supplied by the ISO (International Organization for Standardization). It bases its list of country names and abbreviations on the list of names published by the United Nations. For uniformity the ECS also utilizes these 3-letter codes to identify nations (abbreviations) The codes for each corresponding country can be found below.

ECS database also utilizes the three-letter abbreviations which are otherwise referred to as the well-known Chapman County Codes for Irish Counties, these codes are widely accepted and are used on the SURNAME lists for Rootsweb.

Counties of Scotland (SCT)

Most Scottish counties end in -shire, whether it is necessary to distinguish the county from a town or not. Some counties end in -s or -ss before the -shire is added so we have Kinross-shire, Inverness-shire, but Dumfriesshire (no hyphen) and Peebleshire (the s dropped). Note the spellings of the town of Dumbarton and the county of Dunbartonshire. Scotland is now (since 1975) divided into REGIONS which are much larger than the old counties. Many of the old county names remain as Districts or parts of Districts. The county of Angus was earlier called Forfarshire.

Three-Character Codes for Ireland
Northern Ireland (NIR) and The Rebublic of Ireland (IRL)

Ireland (has 4 provinces Connaught, Leinster, Munster and Ulster ) Ulster is the most northerly of the four historic provinces and consists of counties Antrim, Armagh, Cavan, Derry, Donegal, Down, Fermanagh, Monaghan and Tyrone. Although the name "Ulster" is now often used interchangeably for Northern Ireland, three of its counties, Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan, are part of the Republic of Ireland (or Erie). The Normans managed to settle along the east coast from the twelfth century, but the power of the O'Neills and O'Donnells remained intact elsewhere in the province until the seventeenth century when the final collapse of the old Gaelic civilization led to the Plantation of Ulster and a massive influx of settlers from Scotland and England.
